Fears that rising debts have damaging impact on mental health (2)
A city charity has warned that mental health issues are too often “under the radar”.16 May 2014
Newcastle Citizens Advice Bureau has backed mental health awareness week amid concern that three in four people seeking help with a debt problem said that their money worries were having a damaging impact on their mental health.
Shona Alexander, chief executive of Newcastle CAB, said: “Mental health problems are often hidden, but they can have a devastating impact on the individuals affected and their families. Without help people can really be hit hard.
“One of the hidden effects of the recent economic crisis is the stress and anxiety which money worries can lead to.
“Every year we help people in Newcastle with around 15,000 debt problems.
“Financial difficulties which seem impossible to deal with can be made even worse by the day-to-day stress of trying to make ends meet.
“Anyone in Newcastle who is finding that money worries are getting on top of them should come to us and we will help get things under control.”
